The Unico Sustainability team recently returned from Los Angeles where they joined thousands of fellow sustainability professionals at Greenbuild 2016. From the expo floor to a wide range of education sessions, the annual event provided opportunities to learn about innovative new technology, share experiences with colleagues, and reflect on the many team successes achieved in the last year.
One of the conference highlights was the Plenary speaker, journalist and best-selling author Sebastian Junger. “I felt inspired by the key note speaker [Sebastian Junger] who spoke quite a bit about some pretty amazing and devastating stories; each was filled with some sort of lesson or silver lining mostly surrounding the idea of how communities rally in the face of hardship,” said Jodie Clarke, Sustainability Manager in Seattle. “I felt inspired in that it’s really hard to remember on a daily basis how our work affects our global “hardship” in the climate change crisis at large. We are doing something and we are needed to help curb carbon emissions and improve building occupant health. The green building community is a dedicated one and it felt nice to hear someone like him praise us for our work. ”
As the team returns to their offices — re-energized by the speakers, discussions about LEED Dynamic Plaque, the introduction of arc, and the possibilities of what these platforms may mean for the green building industry — they do so with the knowledge that their work is meaningful and serves an important purpose: communicating sustainability goals clearly and efficiently to operating teams, ownership and building occupants, allowing everyone to become part of the equation that results in more efficient buildings with lower impacts on the surrounding environment.
